Questions Answered and Comments Given

~ Below, you will find comments and answers from Rachel, the creator and owner of Happy-Hollisters.com. ~

*Please note that if you have a question, I may have already answered it in these pages. Please check here first. If not, I will get to it when possible or may not have an answer for you. As a result of spambots and companies spamming their URLs, I now need to manually sort and file each guest book entry. Having four websites, you can imagine the logistics. Since this is a fan site (in other words, I don’t make enough money off this site to even pay for hosting services or domain name costs - in 2004, I believe I made under $2 in affiliate sales...smile), it is by necessity, the last site on my rounds. In simpler terms, I'll get to it when I can.

The page for reader comments has now been created at Guestbook 2 - Comments From Readers. You can also access the Memories of the Happy Hollisters Books page, which houses a number of comments from previous incarnations of the guest book. Enjoy!

Comments:The Happy Hollisters seem to have made an impact in so many of our lives. For years, I was the only one I knew who read them. While not as well known as some other series of the perod, the Hollisters really seem to have a loyal, lifelong following. It would be great to meet others who share a love and bond with these books from our childhood. How about a Happy Hollister convention?
May 23, 2004 01:22:21 (GMT Time)

Rachel's response - Not a bad idea at all, David. Let me think this one over a bit, and see what I can come up with. I think this idea would be one way to garner more interest in the series and would also allow fans to get together. As usual, time is an issue for me, but I'll look to the sci-fi conventions for inspiration. If Lexx (one of my favorite Sci-Fi series) can have a convention, I don't see why the Happy Hollisters can't do the same.

Comments:I love your site. I'm sure it would have delighted my grandfather. On a sad note, Marian Svenson passed away on Sunday, January 4. She was Andrew Svenson's loving wife for over 40 years. She was a terrific lady, and will be greatly missed. It's safe to say The Happy Hollisters would not have existed without her.
January 9, 2004 03:58:08 (GMT Time)
Rachel's response - As they say, "Behind every good man is a good woman". By every indication I've heard of, Marian Svenson, was indeed a good woman. I'm sorry to hear of her passing and my heartfelt sympathies go out to your family.

Comments:What would one need to pay to purchase the entire series of 33 books?
December 16, 2003 07:20:11 (GMT Time)
Rachel's response - Wow, what a question! You can find the value guide for each book here. As for the entire series, it's difficult to find the entire series as a whole, but on the rare occasions that I've seen the entire series being sold, it's been at eBay auctions. Mind you, it's been about a year since I've seen this, but at the time, the entire series sold for over $350.00 (all with dust jackets and/or pictoral covers). Without dust jackets, it would likely sell for less.

*note - update: The most recent siting of a full series (again with dust jackets and pictoral covers) was in the $400.00 range. This was in Fall of 2004. I'd also like to note that the few times I have seen full sets for sale, Midnight Trolls was pictoral, which is worth about half the price of the Midnight Trolls with dust jacket in mint condition.

Comments:I found my box of Happy Hollister books. I have 28 of them including 2 first editions. And all have dust jackets except one (which I loaned to my little sister...I remember :-)... I believe that the Merry-Go-Round book is number 10 and Pony Hill Farm is number 11, both from the comment you mention in your listing and Merry Go Round was published in 1955 and Pony Hill Farm 1956. So, that is cleared up. Know a good place to find the remaining books that I'm missing? Thanks again, Kim
December 13, 2003 07:06:16 (GMT Time)

Rachel's answer - Though it seems to be heresy to some (as a result of the dust jacket number), I agree fully that Merry-Go-Round is #10 and Pony Hill Farm comes after as #11. As for sources to find the Hollister books, read the answer below. It's the most popular question I receive and my answer is always the same.

Comments:HELP! I am looking for Happy Hollister books For my kids because I enjoyed them so much. Any ideas of where I could find some?
November 26, 2003 04:01:49 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Try eBay, yard sales, thrift stores, auctions and library sales. You can also sometimes find the Hollister series at used bookstores, Half.com or through various online sources (try a google search).

Comments:I can't believe that they have not gone into reprint of these great kids books. I spent many happy hours reading these books and am now giving them to a neighbor's daughter.
November 11, 2003 20:13:03 (GMT Time)
Rachel's response - Every one of us that has read the series, or books from the series, understands what a great series it is. Unfortunately, the publishing industry doesn't quite understand the concept yet. I keep hoping that some smart up-and-coming publishing house realizes how loved these books are and realizes the potential niche market (a similar market to The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew) that exists for The Happy Hollisters. The marketing potential is enormous. I'm with you, I wish they'd reprint the series as well. Unfortunately, I don't own a publishing house or I would have already been in talks to recreate this series for a new generation.

Comments:Yeah, just wanted to say that I'm the Joey Brill who used to beat up that wimp; Ricky Hollister. Also, *sentence deleted for content*. Not much has happened to me over the years. I became a writer of children's books and was recently paroled from the Shoreham Federal Corrections Facility. Unfortunately, under the conditions of my parole, I can't get within 50 feet of any of the Hollister kids, which is a shame, because I hear that Pam looks alot like Faith Hill now. Take Care, Joey Brill
September 13, 2003 15:34:17 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - LOL Well Joey, it's nice to hear from you. Since kids read this site, I had to delete
part of your reply, but thought it was cute regardless.

Comments:Hi - I am amazed to find this website. I loved to read the HH books when I was a kid and got them from my local library. Now that my daughter is 7 and reads so well, I am hoping to get my hands on as many as possible. BUT the postage to Australia from the US is phenomenal. Boo hoo. Do you have any contacts in Australia with regards to purchasing any copies? I have seen only one on Ebay.com.au unfortunately. Thanks Rachel... good work on this site.
July 24, 2003 03:20:46 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Karen, at this point I don't have any contacts for Australia, but would eventually like to put up a "Trading Post" area that will help buyers and sellers get together. No promises on when I'll be able to do so though.

Comments:I'm looking for the last HH book (of course) and I'm haunting the halls of EBay in vain...are there any other sources? I've checked Barnes and Noble and no dice. It doesn't matter what condition Mystery of the Midnight Trolls is in (well all the pages have to be together), just wanted to read it again (blush) and share them with the kids. Also, I've purchased several HH books on EBay that don't have the regular red hardcovers, these have yellow or green with the picture as part of the hardcover binding - no dust jackets. Were these specially ordered editions for schools or libraries? Thanks RSS, this is a great site!
July 10, 2003 17:53:53 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Melissa, these are the educational/library edition. At the moment I'm working off of a scanner through my printer ($3 at a yard sale), but will scan in the two books I have in this edition as soon as I purchase a flat bed scanner. As for Midnight Trolls, I was lucky enough to find mine (pictoral cover, never read) on eBay but I still haven't been able to find an affordable copy of the regular or club edition. It's value is around $120 or so in today's market because it's the hardest book to find in the series.

*Rachel Note 2 (April 2005) - Merry Christmas to me. I now have a very capable digital camera and will likely be uploading all of the various jackets and editions I have in my personal collection. Of course, as usual, time is always an issue.

Comments:I just picked up a copy of "Midnight Trolls," however is is a hardback with the dust cover as the binding (kind of like picture board). Could someone please explain this edition. God Bless Billy
June 23, 2003 05:08:02 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Billy, this is the pictoral edition of Midnight Trolls. It's not worth as much as the regular edition, but still worth around $50.00 to $60.00 (about half the value of regular or club edition with this title) in mint condition. With the rarity of Midnight Trolls in general, the value of both the pictoral edition and the club/regular editions is rising.

Comments:I was given some of the Happy-Hollisters books as a present from my Great Aunt some time ago. I recently pulled them out and began looking at them again. I would really like to expand my collection that is valued at about $150.00 so far but first i would like to take care of the ones that I already have. The books are in great condition but underneath the dust cover is some mold starting ,it seems like it can be easliy wipped away but i am afraid to put anything on it that may decrease the value of the book.If you have any ideas i would be more than to happy to hear them. Please help. Thanks a bunch!
June 20, 2003 00:34:26 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Christina, this will take some research and time on my part to answer. As soon as I know the answer, I'll put up an article on the subject. Until then, here is one tip that has worked well for me in the past. If your books smell musty, simply put them in a box with a few slices of bread for a few days. It should take care of most of the smell. Add a few more slices of bread and a few more days if the smell is really bad.

Comments:I have the entire 33 book collection of the Doubleday edition of the Happy Hollisters - Anyone interested in purchasing? The books are in very good to excellent shape.
June 17, 2003 23:40:08 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Beverly, one of these days I am actually going to find time to put up a "Trading Post" area to hook up people who are selling and looking for the Hollister books. Until then, the only type of advertising allowed in my guestbook is if you are selling Happy Hollister books. Just be forewarned that such posts will eventually be moved to a more appropriate area. Thanks.

Comments:Love this site. Brings back memories of being a kid again! Question: Which HH book was it that had the finger alphabet printed on the inside covers? Thanks.
May 14, 2003 19:25:36 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Barrett, The book you are looking for is "The Happy Hollisters and The Haunted House Mystery". The deaf character in the book is named Charles, and "the finger alphabet" (or in other words, basic ASL alphabet) is located in the beginning of the book, right before the first page of the first chapter.

Comments:I'm wondering if anyone who has a complete set of Hollister dust jackets would consider color copying them for me, as all mine have been lost in moving. 33 sheets of legal size paper and maybe a Kinkos store and I would be such a happy camper!! Write me if you can help me out. Thanx for a great site. A source for Hollister books is: Abebooks.com They have all the titles, and in all varying conditions of wear!! Only the last four issues cost big money. Thanx again, Wes
May 6, 2003 12:24:52 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - Wes, Thank you for your advice on where to purchase the series. I would also recommend checking out ebay.com as many of the titles can be found there for an affordable price as well!

Comments:I started to collect the Happy Hollister's about 22 years ago. I have about 10 books all with dust jackets in pretty good condition. I have books 1,3,5,12,16,18,27,29 & 31. I don't know the number to Mystery at Missile Town and I have that book as well. Maybe you can let me know what book number that one is. It's fun to visit your site and I look forward to seeing future updates. Thanks.
April 10, 2003 02:10:16 (GMT Time)
Rachel's answer - The Happy Hollisters and the Mystery at Missile Town is book number 19. You can find out what number each title is on the Happy Hollisters Titles Page at: http://happy-hollisters.com/archives/hollistertitles.html.

Comments:I recently saw a copy of the Happy Hollisters that was written in French. So, I guess they published in French as well. I fulfilled a childhood wish when I brought my children (ages 8 & 9)to the Ice Carnival in Quebec this year. They had read the book too. Bonhomme is still alive and well in Canada during February. The ice sculptures are outstanding.

Rachel's answer - Patricia - Thank you for the information. I will add it to the pertaining pages on the site as soon as I get time.

Comments: I was wondering - I have dark red copies of the Happy Hollister series, they came in the mail. How can I find info on this version?
March 5, 2003 19:33:26 (GMT Time)

Rachel's answer - The red cover books are the club, garden city or regular editions without
their dust jackets. You can usually purchase them for a dollar or so because they are
missing the dust jacket.
